Symptom
When you try to download or view a file you see the "Watermark could not be applied to the document" message.
Causes & Solutions - PDFs
- Too Large: The file is very large and the watermark is taking too long to be applied.
Solution: The administrator of the project can split the document in two, and re-upload to Firmex to allow the watermark to apply on the smaller files. - Encryption: The PDF may have been previously encrypted before being uploaded with a password or other types of security.
Solution: The Admin can print the file to PDF (which removes security), then re-upload the document to Firmex to allow the watermark to be applied.
Causes & Solutions - Excel
- Too Large: The area of the spreadsheet is very large and the watermark is taking too long to be applied.
Solution: If there are multiple worksheets, the Admin of the project can save each sheet as a separate Excel file, then re-upload them to allow the watermark to apply to the smaller files. - Encryption: The Excel file may have been previously encrypted before being uploaded with a password or other types of security.
Solution: The Admin can open the file in Excel, remove the protections, then re-upload into Firmex to allow the watermark to be applied. - Invalid data: There may be invalid data in formulas causing errors with the watermark process.
Solution: The Admin can open the file in Excel and remove the invalid data:
a) Open the file in Excel
b) Use the Go To > Special command (Ctrl - G > Special)
c) Click Formulas > Errors
d) If an error is found, fix or delete the formula
e) Once all errors are removed, re-upload the file to Firmex to allow the watermark to be applied
