What are Legacy .xls Excel Files?
.xls files are spreadsheet files created by Microsoft Excel, primarily used before the introduction of the newer .xlsx format in Excel 2007. Microsoft ended support for legacy .xls files in 2016.
How does Firmex handle viewing Legacy .xls files?
When you open an .xls file in the Firmex Viewer, it will open as an image printed to PDF, and subsequent tabs in the spreadsheet will be split into pages. It’s not optimized and will not support all the features of our regular Excel Viewer, like tabs and cell navigation.
How can I ensure my spreadsheets look and feel like Excel when being opened in the Firmex Viewer?
You can save the file as an .xlsx file on your computer before uploading it to Firmex to ensure it’s optimized for the best viewing experience. To do so:
- Open the file in Excel on your computer
- In the File menu, choose Save As
- Select Excel Workbook (*.xlsx) from the dropdown as the file type
Once the new file is uploaded to Firmex, it will be optimized for the viewer and will look and feel like using Excel.
